According to Coppens, it''s the teen market, which has long been avoided by vendors and mass retailers alike when it comes to Halloween, that may provide a growth opportunity. This fickle group tends to shun manufacturers costumes, but a new line from Disguise addresses the often warped sense of humor: A teenage witch "with attitude," a deranged doctor, a creepy doll, a gothic princess and even a dead cheerleader have been developed. "Some of the more upscale mass retailers may take this line," said Coppens.
Surely it''s of some significance, however, that Halloween is the one special day on the calendar without any religious, national or moral meaning (the vestigial connections to All Saints'' Eve having vanished long ago). The festival commemorates no event, cause or person, whether sacred or secular. There is no "tree meaning" of the day to be either enhanced or exploited by commercial display. Halloween is an invitation to pure, open-ended, individualistic play. For many people in a pluralistic society, in which public meanings are increasingly absent or contested, this kind of celebration may come as a great relief.
